Electrical engineer in the field of hydrogen
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft ( www.fraunhofer.de ) is one of the world’s leading organizations for application-oriented research. 75 institutes develop pioneering technologies for our economy and society – more precisely: 32,000 people from technology, science, administration and IT. They know: Anyone who comes to Fraunhofer wants to and can make a difference. For themselves, for us and for the markets of today and tomorrow.
At the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems IWES, the energy transition becomes reality every day. Our focus topics are: Offshore wind energy, hydrogen, testing infrastructure and digitalization. More than 400 employees – including around 100 students – from over 50 countries work at nine locations in scientific and non-scientific teams on the development of innovative methods to promote the expansion of wind energy systems. Do you want to shape the future sustainably with us?
You will strengthen the “HLB – Hydrogen Lab Bremerhaven” group at the Bremerhaven site. Here we operate a hydrogen test field, HLB for short, with a large test infrastructure with which we research the interaction of wind turbines with electrolytic hydrogen production in more detail. We test electrolysers, fuel cells and other components, both individually and in combination, to investigate the dynamic performance of wind energy and its integration into the energy system of tomorrow. The team currently consists of four employees and several students. We support each other regardless of projects and backgrounds. Open exchange and cooperation, even across team boundaries and locations, are particularly important to us.
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft plays a central role in the innovation process with its focus on key technologies relevant to the future and on the exploitation of results in business and industry. As a trailblazer and driving force for innovative developments and scientific excellence, it helps to shape our society and our future.
Your tasks
- You will take on tasks in the planning, construction and testing of electrical systems such as medium-voltage, low-voltage and converter systems in the hydrogen economy. This includes advancing the technical integration of new test specimens by comparing interface data and planning, executing or coordinating the electrical connection. Depending on the test requirements, you will liaise with the local grid operator and coordinate joint test projects with other internal IWES groups. In future research and industrial projects, you will plan conversions or plant expansions, coordinate companies and tenders for execution and carry out both commissioning and operation yourself and/or monitor necessary steps.
- You will also be part of the operations team for the HLB and involved in day-to-day business on site. This means that you will lend a hand yourself by controlling converters and switchgear and troubleshooting faults. In the future, you will receive a switching authorization so that you can provide support on safety issues relating to electrical engineering at HLB. You will also prepare publications on our scientific findings and publish them in specialist journals.
Your qualifications
- You have completed your diploma/master’s degree in electrical engineering or a similar course of study. Perhaps you completed an apprenticeship in electrical engineering beforehand? Are you familiar with the design and operation of medium-voltage and low-voltage systems and know what needs to be considered? Perhaps you have experience in operating test benches? Great, then read on.
- If you also have experience in the implementation of EU projects, preferably as a technical project manager, that would be great. Perhaps you are also familiar with programming in Python? Great! But don’t worry if your profile doesn’t yet cover all fields. You can also start your career with us. At IWES, we operate on an international level, which is why knowledge of German and English will make your day-to-day work easier.
Benefits
- We support you on your individual career path. Be it personal, professional or methodical, we will find the right qualification measures for you. It is also possible to do your doctorate independently with us. We will actively support you! Do you want to get involved in other subject areas and take responsibility for driving topics forward? With us, you can actively shape your area of responsibility.
- Our open institute culture, mutual tolerance and respect help to ensure that everyone feels at home here from the outset. We specifically promote this through our onboarding program for new employees, for example, as well as through awareness-raising and further training on the topics of diversity and equal opportunities. Because we firmly believe that diversity makes a decisive contribution to our success. Come and join us and see for yourself!
- With our flexitime and core working hours system, you can organize your working day flexibly. You also have the opportunity to work remotely with us. Don’t know where to put your children in an emergency? We support you with emergency childcare. Employee discounts for events, clothing, vacations, etc. suit you? With us, you can choose from a wide range of offers and use them easily via the app. For sustainable mobility, you can also benefit from the Deutschland-Ticket job ticket.
