The Helmholtz Center Hereon conducts cutting-edge international research for a changing world: around 1,000 employees contribute to tackling climate change, the sustainable use of global coastal systems and the resource-friendly improvement of quality of life. From fundamental understanding to practical application, the interdisciplinary research spectrum covers a unique range. The fuel-free research reactor facility was finally shut down in 2010. The neutrons produced were used to carry out non-destructive tests on new materials. As part of the public dialog that has been conducted for many years, the research center provides information on the decommissioning and dismantling of nuclear facilities ( www.hereon.de/dialog ).
